Activation Lock and your MDM — the prerequisite for resale
Apple Activation Lock prevents a Mac from being reused or resold once the original Apple ID is bound. For corporate-deployed Macs enrolled in Apple Business Manager (ABM) or Apple School Manager (ASM) with MDM-enforced enrolment: Maxicom requires the MDM to release the device from supervision before pickup. The release process is documented in our intake checklist; for clients on Jamf Pro, Microsoft Intune, Kandji, Mosyle, Hexnode, JumpCloud, the steps are well-rehearsed. Without the release, the Mac cannot be redeployed and is routed to physical destruction at scrap value — preventing this is the single highest-value-recovery step in any Apple fleet retirement.
Apple Secure Erase + Secure Enclave key destruction
Modern Macs (T2 Intel and Apple Silicon M-series) use hardware-encrypted storage with the Media Encryption Key held in the Secure Enclave. Maxicom's per-device protocol: (1) verify Activation Lock cleared and MDM enrolment released; (2) sign out of iCloud and Find My; (3) execute Erase All Content and Settings via macOS recoveryOS, which triggers Secure Enclave key destruction; (4) verify the post-erase factory state; (5) document on the per-device Certificate of Destruction. The Secure Enclave key destruction is cryptographically Cryptographic Erase per NIST SP 800-88 Rev. 1 — once the Secure Enclave key is gone, the encrypted data on flash is unrecoverable.
Battery health and chassis grading drives MacBook resale pricing
MacBook Pro and Air resale pricing is heavily influenced by battery cycle count and chassis cosmetic grade. Standard intake captures: battery cycle count from System Information, battery condition rating, chassis cosmetic grade (A: like-new; B: light wear; C: scratched; D: dented or screen-damaged), keyboard condition, and trackpad condition. Quotes are line-item per device. Battery-replacement-required units are routed through our Apple-authorised refurb partner where available before resale, which lifts settlement value.
Mac Studio and Mac Pro — niche but liquid
Mac Studio (M1 Max / M1 Ultra / M2 Max / M2 Ultra) and Mac Pro M2 Ultra have narrower secondary-market depth than MacBook but command firmer pricing because supply is limited and demand from creative-production and ML-research buyers is steady. We hold the trader-channel relationships for cross-border Mac Studio resale particularly into the post-production market in MENA and ASEAN.
Settlement and engagement mechanics
Settlement is in your reporting currency (CAD) against your purchase order, line-item per asset, payment terms agreed in the SOW. Programme engagements run on milestone-based settlement against the rolling pickup schedule with monthly true-up. Cross-border engagements (where the asset routes between Maxicom operating regions) are consolidated to your reporting-currency entity through internal Maxicom inter-company arrangements; the customer-facing transaction is single-currency. The SOW is structured per the Maxicom legal entity that contracts with you (Maxicom UAE, Maxicom India, Maxicom Singapore, Maxicom Canada, Maxicom Hong Kong); GST / VAT / HST / withholding-tax treatment is handled per local tax law. Quote validity follows the asset class — 14 days for steady-state enterprise hardware, 5 business days for AI accelerators where the secondary market re-prices weekly, 30 days for memory and components. We re-quote without penalty where the validity has lapsed and the customer is ready to transact.
Audit defensibility and certificate format
Every asset routed through this engagement receives a per-asset Certificate of Destruction with eleven required fields: serial number, make/model/capacity, data classification at retirement, sanitisation method (Clear/Purge/Destroy under NIST SP 800-88 Rev. 1, with the specific technique cited), particle size or field strength or encryption algorithm where applicable, sanitisation tool + version + verification response, UTC timestamp + facility location, operator name + ID + signature, witness signature where present, chain-of-custody reference back to the pickup manifest, and the destruction reason where Reuse-First triage was overridden. Certificates are admissible against OSFI B-13, PIPEDA, NIST SP 800-88 Rev. 1, IEEE 2883-2022, and (where contractually specified) DoD 5220.22-M and NAID-grade Protocol — one certificate covers all simultaneously. Certificate retention is 7 years default, 8+ years for BFSI engagements, longer where the master service agreement specifies.
Cross-border resale routing under NDA
Where local market depth in Canada cannot absorb the retiring volume at fair refurb pricing, working assets route cross-border through Maxicom's trader-channel network — MENA → ASEAN, IND → ASEAN + MENA, CA → US sub-tier markets and ASEAN, SG → MENA + ASEAN. The routing decision is made per asset-class at engagement scoping; the customer sees the routing on the SOW and can opt out where channel-respect or sovereign-data-residency rules require. NDA discipline is standard. Surplus does not return to your own market's primary channel without explicit consent. Export classification (US BIS for AI accelerators; equivalent local regimes for other restricted-class hardware) is handled before the trade closes; restricted-party screening is part of every cross-border transaction.
Reuse-First disposition KPIs reported back to you
Programme-level engagements receive quarterly business reviews covering: total tonnage processed, Reuse-First reuse rate (% refurbished and redeployed vs % destroyed by media class), residual value recovered in CAD, embodied-carbon-recovered estimate (CO₂e avoided by keeping working assets in service rather than replacing them with newly-manufactured hardware), diversion-from-landfill percentage, material-recovery breakdown, and exception reporting. The reporting format is mapped to your sustainability reporting framework — CSRD ESRS E5, ISSB IFRS S1/S2, BRSR Principle 6, GRI 301/305/306, SASB IT services standards. Single-event engagements receive the same data as a per-engagement summary attached to the consolidated certificate. The reuse-rate metric is the most informative KPI: our blended cohort typically runs around two-thirds reuse rate (indicative); programme engagements typically improve year-over-year as the engagement learns the asset mix.

Frequently asked questions
What if Activation Lock is still bound when you receive the Mac?
We will return the device for unlock. We do not pay buyback on Activation-Locked Macs and we will not bypass Activation Lock — Apple's policy explicitly prohibits it and the secondary market will not accept activation-locked devices. Our intake check identifies activation-locked units per engagement SLA of receipt; the data owner is notified immediately so the unlock can happen before the buyback offer expires.
Do you take Macs that are managed by our MDM but not Apple Business Manager-enrolled?
Yes — but the MDM-only release is faster and the buyback is cleaner if ABM enrolment is removed first. We document the MDM disposition on intake.
What about Macs with engraved or asset-tagged chassis?
Asset-tag stickers are removed at intake. Engravings (laser-engraved company name on the chassis) reduce resale value at refurb — we deduct against the engraving on the quote. Some clients elect to physical-destroy engraved Macs rather than allow refurb resale; that election is a manifest item.
How is iCloud / Find My / Apple ID handled?
Sign-out is a prerequisite for buyback. We document the sign-out as part of the intake checklist. Where the original Apple ID owner has left the company and sign-out cannot be completed via standard Apple ID credentials, the data owner provides a confidential chain-of-evidence demonstrating ownership and we work with Apple Business Manager to release.
Do you take Intel-generation Macs (2018-2020) or only Apple Silicon?
Both. Intel-generation Macs (T2-equipped 2018-2020 generation) clear at lower refurb pricing than Apple Silicon, but the secondary-market depth is real and we accept them. Pre-T2 Intel Macs (2017 and earlier) are accepted but may route to scrap rather than refurb depending on condition.
What about Mac Pro 2019 (Intel Xeon W)?
Yes — Mac Pro 2019 retains specific niche resale value (post-production, scientific computing, certain DSPs). Quote validity is 14 days. Apple AppleCare on Mac Pro adds resale value if transferable.
